Virginia – A State of Emergency

From the Storm Tracker Center

RICHMOND – Governor Bob McDonnell declared a state of emergency today, authorizing state agencies to assist local governments responding to the potential winter storm that is expected to affect parts of the Commonwealth Friday and Saturday.

The exact snowfall total, and storm track, is still uncertain, but the southern half of Virginia from Southwest Virginia to Hampton Roads is expected to receive the brunt of the storm, and has the potential for significant accumulations of snow.

In declaring a state of emergency, the governor authorizes state agencies to identify and position resources for quick response anywhere they are needed in Virginia. A State of Emergency must be issued in advance to allow for proper and effective preparation. State agencies are getting ready for the storm by taking actions, including:

* The Virginia Department of Emergency Management has held weather conference calls with the National Weather Service, state agencies and local governments.
* The Virginia Department of State Police and the Department of Transportation are preparing to keep roadways clear and assist motorists.
* The Virginia National Guard has placed 200 soldiers on standby.
* The Virginia Emergency Operations Center will bring in a small number of response team members beginning Friday night. By Saturday morning, a larger group from several state agencies, major utilities and other affiliated organizations will be in place.

Virginians in the affected areas can prepare for the storm by having an emergency kit in their home and vehicle that includes water, food, a battery-powered radio, blankets, flashlight and extra batteries. Also, citizens should monitor news outlets for updates on this developing storm, and check road conditions before they leave home by calling 511 or logging in to 511Virginia.org. In areas where significant snowfall occurs, Virginians are encouraged to stay off the roads until the storm abates and roads are cleared.

1 inch of rainfall in about 20 minutes

You would not think it by looking at the radar image but it happened. Last night was Megan’s (second child) kindergarten musically. I had to go and pick up Deanna (first child) along with Kathryn (third child) and Jonathan (fourth child) from girl scout’s. After I picked her up it started to pour and I could barely see to drive over to the school. We got there and the play was suppose to start at 1900, and we had to sit in the van for about twenty minutes because we had no umbrellas. Got inside saw the last 10 minutes of the musically and came home. Told the wife I beat we picked up about an inch of rainfall and sure enough checked the rain gauge and was right. That was a very quick and heavy storm.

Another rainy day…

Nothing to write home about this weekend. We did have a nice little line of showers form Sunday afternoon, but nothing came of it. It was close to the house but then pushed down to the South. We did pick up around .10 inches of rainfall from the storm but nothing else.

For the first part of the week we should see some great spring like weather. Temperatures in the mid to upper 70’s and lows in the 50’s and the occasionally spring time shower or two. Great weather on tap for Memorial Day weekend and a great weekend to play some golf!

Chester, Virginia, weather forecast

Did anybody ask for rain?

storm total for 1st of Feb 2008Woke up this morning to a great deal of rainfall. I was off today, due to a surgery in the family, but my section Sergeant texted me to find out when the rainfall would end. I check the radar and low and behold a great deal of rainfall was to be seen. In some places around the Richmond area it was pink (rain/snow/sleet/mix). This is the low pressure system that causes some major highway accidents in the Texas plainhandle.

All day today it was raining on and off and at times, it was moderate to heavy. Just about the time we decided to head out to get some food for the super bowl it would pick up. After that we decided we would wait until tonight to go and right now it is clear but temperatures are in the 40’s. We should see a wonderful weekend with temperatures in the 50’s and sunshine. For today we picked up around 1.9 inches of rainfall.
